Profile Details
In February 2018, Siemens announced that it will close its gas turbine plant in Mt. Vernon, OH, citing falling demand for its products due to increased use of alternative energy sources. The facility will close sometime in 2019, affecting 400 workers. About 40 percent of the employees will be given the opportunity to work in other Siemens facilities. Siemens purchased the gas turbine business from Rolls Royce in 2014. It was founded in 1833 as Mount Vernon Iron Works. Siemens received a $700,000 JobsOhio grant to renovate its Engineering Center in 2017. The workforce had previously been reduced several times, with 200 laid off in 2015 shortly after Siemens took over and again in 2016 when certain manufacturing processes were eliminated at the plant.
