The German company Siemens recently agreed to sell its Dresser-Rand government services business to Curtiss-Wright, an American government contracting and manufacturing concern. As a result of this transaction, Curtiss-Wright will be closing the Dresser-Rand facility in Wellsville, NY, by 2020. This factory, which is one of the largest employers in Allegany County, has been in operation since 1916. This facility makes steam turbines and valves for the US Navy, as well as rotors used in the oil and gas industry. The plant currently employs 250 people, and the IAM has represented members there since 1942. Approximately 50 workers may be offered positions with Curtiss-Wright in one of their locations in another state but that currently remains unclear. Some work, which is not part of the Curtiss-Wright acquisition, will be shifted from this location to other Siemens facilities, including Charlotte, NC. It has not yet been determined which Curtiss-Wright facilities will receive the work once the plant is closed.
